The SMK heavy tank

The SMK was a Soviet prototype designed as part of research into heavy tanks in the late 1930s. Its name is derived from the initials of Sergueï Mironovitch Kirov. The vehicle stands out for its two-turret layout: a main turret armed with a 76.2 mm gun, and a secondary turret equipped with a 45 mm gun.

Only one SMK example was built. Development was not continued after the trials, and its use was limited during the Soviet-Finnish war. This model kit is therefore a particularly interesting subject for fans of experimental Soviet armored vehicles and military vehicle programs from the interwar period.

The Trumpeter 09584 kit

Molded in injected plastic, this 1/35 scale reference includes more than 340 parts. The assembled model measures 248.2 mm long and 100 mm wide. The lower hull and turrets are made using slide molds to reproduce the vehicle’s specific armor shapes.

The kit includes detailed plastic tracks, a photo-etched part, and a copper cable. Parts are spread across thirteen sprues, completed by the lower hull and the turret elements.

Assembly and finishing

Building a tank at 1/35 scale requires careful preparation of the parts before gluing, especially for the running gear components, tracks, and turrets. A primer suitable for plastic models then makes it easier to apply paint and bring out the raised details.

A progressive finish—painting, applying decals when desired, then light weathering or aging—helps emphasize the imposing character of this Soviet prototype. The SMK can also serve as the centerpiece of a diorama dedicated to late-1930s Soviet armored vehicles or the Soviet-Finnish conflict.
