The Russian 2S1 Self-propelled Howitzer by Trumpeter, reference 05571, is a static model kit to be assembled at 1/35, featuring the 2S1 self-propelled howitzer. This kit recreates a Soviet artillery vehicle equipped with a 122 mm howitzer, also known as 2S1 Gvozdika.

At a scale of 1/35, this replica naturally fits into a collection of Soviet or Russian armored vehicles, as well as into a diorama dedicated to self-propelled artillery from the Cold War and more recent periods. Once assembled, the model measures 212.2 mm long and 82 mm wide.

The real 2S1 vehicle was developed in the Soviet Union based on a chassis derived from the MT-LB armored transporter. Its tracked chassis, 122 mm 2A18 howitzer, and amphibious capabilities made it a recognizable piece of mobile artillery. Its design enabled use in difficult terrains, including snowy or marshy areas.

The Trumpeter kit includes more than 960 parts. It features 22 sprues, a lower hull, an upper hull, and a turret. The main components are molded using multiple-slide molding techniques to reproduce the armored vehicle’s shapes. Two photo-etched parts sheets are also included to enhance the detailing of certain areas.

Assembling an armored vehicle at 1/35 requires careful preparation of the parts before gluing: clean trimming of the sprues, removal of molding lines, and regular checks of the alignment of the running gear, the hull, and the turret. Photo-etched parts are best worked with a fine-tipped tweezer and an appropriate bending tool.

For finishing, applying a model primer helps paint adhere and allows you to check the quality of the assemblies. Weathering techniques, dry brushing, washes, and dusting effects can then be used to bring out the relief details, mechanical areas, and the operational character of a self-propelled howitzer.
