Russian ZSU-57-2 SPAAG, 1/35 - Trumpeter 05559

The ZSU-57-2 SPAAG Trumpeter 05559 is a plastic model kit to be assembled at 1/35, depicting the Soviet self-propelled anti-aircraft gun ZSU-57-2. This reference reproduces a tracked vehicle armed with two 57 mm automatic cannons, recognizable by its open turret and twin armament.

The ZSU-57-2 entered service in the Soviet Army in 1955. Its name means Zenitnaya Samokhodnaya Ustanovka, i.e. self-propelled anti-aircraft installation; the number 57 refers to the caliber of the cannons, and the number 2 to the number of barrels. It was the first tracked self-propelled anti-aircraft gun produced in series by the Soviet Union.

The Trumpeter kit consists of more than 540 parts and includes 19 sprues, as well as the upper and lower hull parts. It comes with a photo-etched sheet and a copper cable. The tracks are represented by 186 individual links, a solution well suited for accurately reproducing the running gear line and track tension.

Once assembled, the model measures 244.9 mm in length and 93.4 mm in width. At 1/35 scale, the dimensions of the real vehicle are reduced thirty-five times—an extremely popular format for armored vehicles, diorama scenes, and weathering work.

Assembly calls for the usual steps of plastic modeling: part preparation, gluing, joint line cleanup, and painting. Using a primer makes it easier to apply color and highlights the details before paint application. The separate-link tracks help achieve a realistic finish for a project focused on Cold War-era Soviet armored vehicles.
