USMC LAV-25 ''Piranha 2'', 1/35 - Trumpeter 00349

The USMC LAV-25 “Piranha 2” model kit from Trumpeter, reference 00349, reproduces at a scale of 1/35 the light armored vehicle LAV-25 used by the United States Marine Corps. This static armor kit makes it possible to build an eight-wheeled vehicle for collections of modern military vehicles and for dioramas dedicated to the U.S. Marines.

The LAV-25 of the United States Marines

The LAV-25 is an armored reconnaissance vehicle with a two-man turret. Its armament includes a 25 mm M242 automatic cannon as well as two 7.62 mm M240 machine guns. While its rear compartment can carry up to six infantrymen, the Marines primarily used it in an armored reconnaissance role. Between 1983 and 1987, the Marines received 422 LAV-25 units.

The Trumpeter 1/35 scale model

The Trumpeter reference 00349 includes 291 parts. The assembled model measures 184.6 mm in length, 73.6 mm in width, and 79 mm in height. The set includes seven sprues and four figures. An USMC scheme is also planned for finishing the vehicle.

At a scale of 1/35, each dimension of the real vehicle is reduced by a factor of 35. This widely used modeling scale makes it easier to integrate the LAV-25 into a contemporary setting, alongside compatible figures and accessories.

Assembly and finishing

Building a wheeled armored vehicle requires careful preparation of the parts, especially the running gear, the hull, and the turret. A dry-fit of the subassemblies helps check the fit before gluing. Then, applying a suitable primer supports an even paint finish.

The USMC scheme can be enhanced with well-controlled weathering techniques: washes to bring out raised details, dusting of the lower hull and wheels, or subtle wear marks. The four included figures provide a great starting point for adding a human presence to a reconnaissance or movement scene.
