F8F-2 Bearcat, 1/48 - Hobby Boss 80358

The F8F-2 Bearcat Hobby Boss 80358 is a military aircraft model kit to be assembled at 1/48. It reproduces the F8F-2 version of the American carrier-based fighter, the Grumman Bearcat, recognizable by its high tail fin from the series.

The Grumman F8F-2 Bearcat

The Bearcat belonged to the last generation of piston-engine carrier-based fighters developed for the US Navy. Designed by Grumman around the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine, it combined a compact airframe with high performance. The F8F-2 is the enlarged fin production version.

The Hobby Boss model kit

This reference offers a detailed 1/48-scale replica of the F8F-2, a scale popular for military aircraft thanks to its balance between size and finishing possibilities. The engraved structural lines are included, and the interior features in particular the cockpit, the radial engine with two rows of cylinders, the wheel wells, and the landing gear.

Assembly allows the wings to be displayed either in the deployed or folded position; the latter configuration requires cutting the relevant parts. The propeller is provided as a single part with four blades, while the canopy is made up of two elements. The armament and external stores include two bombs, four rockets, as well as an additional ventral tank with its supports.

• “White 105” from VF-151, aboard the USS Boxer in 1950.

Assembly and finishing

As with any plastic model kit to be assembled, preparing the parts, gluing, painting, and applying the decals are part of the project. A suitable primer helps reveal any seam lines and prepares the surface before painting. The engraved lines also allow for light weathering to emphasize the aircraft’s structure.
