Tupolev-144D, Soviet Supersonic Passenger Aircraft, 1/144 - ICM 14402

The Tupolev-144D ICM 14402 is an assembly model kit at 1/144 depicting the Tu-144D version of the Soviet supersonic airliner Tupolev Tu-144. This reference lets you recreate an iconic civil aircraft from the Cold War era, recognizable by its sleek silhouette, delta wing, and retractable canard planes.

The Tupolev Tu-144D

Designed by the A. N. Tupolev design bureau, the Tu-144 made its first flight on December 31, 1968. The Tu-144D version, developed from 1974, was equipped with RD-36-51A engines and had increased range. Five examples of this variant were built up to 1984.

One of the aircraft represented by this box, the SSSR-77112, carried out cargo flights on the Moscow–Khabarovsk route. Today, this aircraft is preserved in the technical museum in Sinsheim, Germany.

The ICM 14402 model kit

Built at a scale of 1/144, this kit features a wingspan and fuselage that make it a standout piece in a collection dedicated to civil aviation, supersonic aircraft, or Soviet aircraft. Once assembled, the model measures 465 mm long with 204 mm wingspan.

The box contains 114 parts. The included markings allow you to create two different displays of the Tu-144D:

Assembly and finishing

Assembling an airliner model at this scale requires careful alignment of the fuselage halves, wings, and tailplanes in order to preserve the aircraft’s characteristic lines. Preparing the seams—by progressively sanding and using putty where needed—helps achieve a smooth surface before painting.

Applying a suitable primer makes it easier to check the condition of the assemblies and prepares the surface for painting. Decals should be applied to a clean, smooth surface; a glossy finish before application, followed by a final protective coat appropriate to the desired look, helps to highlight the civil markings.

Glue and paints are not included. For assembly, it is recommended to have model glue for plastic kits, a craft knife or tweezers to detach the parts from the sprues, fine abrasives, as well as the necessary painting and finishing products.
