Soviet SU-18 SPH, 1/35 - Hobby Boss 83875
Expected release in October 2026.
Soviet SU-18 SPH, 1:35 from the manufacturer Hobby Boss to scale 1/35 reference 83875The Soviet SU-18 SPH Hobby Boss 83875 is a military model kit to be assembled in injection-molded plastic at 1/35. It reproduces an experimental Soviet self-propelled gun from the interwar period, designed on a base derived from the T-18 light tank. This reference is an original subject for a collection devoted to Soviet armored vehicles, prototype vehicles, or military machines from the 1920s and 1930s.
The SU-18: a Soviet interwar project
The SU-18 was a tracked self-propelled gun project developed for the Red Army in the late 1920s. Its study combined a T-18 chassis with an armored superstructure intended to mount a 76.2 mm regimental gun, model 1927. The vehicle was distinguished in particular by its elevated, angular fighting compartment, which was very different from the turret of the original tank.
The program did not lead to series production. The limitations of the light chassis, as well as the low ammunition carrying capacity, resulted in the project being abandoned in favor of more suitable self-propelled gun concepts. The SU-18 therefore remains a representative subject of Soviet research conducted before World War II on self-propelled artillery.
Hobby Boss model kit features
The 83875 reference offers a 1/35 scale reproduction of this rare vehicle. The assembled model measures approximately 113 mm in length and 67.8 mm in width. At this scale, the dimensions of the real vehicle are reduced by a factor of 35, making it easy to display the SU-18 in an armor showcase or in an interwar diorama.
The kit includes more than 270 plastic parts, distributed across seven sprues, featuring the superstructure and lower hull. It also includes a photo-etched detail sheet and individual-link tracks. These elements allow the special shapes of the hull, running gear, and fighting compartment to be represented with care.
Assembly and finishing
As with any plastic model kit, the SU-18 requires preparing the parts before gluing: careful separation from the sprues, light sanding/deburring, and checking fit. Photo-etched parts are best handled with a fine-point tool or suitable tweezers. The assembly of the individual tracks can be done gradually to maintain consistent alignment around the wheels and sprockets.
Then, applying a primer layer helps standardize the materials and spot any preparation defects. Paint, decals, and gluing products are not included with this model kit unless otherwise indicated. A restrained finish, accompanied by subtle weathering, highlights the armor surface details, the running gear features, and the experimental nature of this Soviet vehicle.
