The 205 is a small car produced from 1983 to the end of 1998 by the French car manufacturer Peugeot, which began development in 1978. The sporty 205 GTI followed in 1984. In 1986, the GTI produced a whopping 128 hp (94 kW) from a 1.9 liter engine and reached a top speed of around 200 km/h while weighing just 921 kg. Peugeot‘s own styling department, La Garenne, was responsible for the design under the direction of Gérard Welter. The sporty small car, which came onto the market in 1984 as a competitor to the Golf GTI, became an object of desire for more than just a whole generation of young French people. Understatement was still a foreign word in the truest sense of the word in the 1980s, with larger aluminum rims and fender flares that ended in red decorative stripes, the 205 GTI, available as a two-door model, stood out visually from the other Peugeot 205s. After a Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 won the World Rally championship in 1985, the 205 GTI was the hype par excellence.
