The Fokker D.VII (OAW built, early) Roden 420 is an injection-plastic model kit to assemble at 1/48, depicting an early production variant of the famous German fighter built by OAW (Ostdeutsche Albatros Werke). This Roden release is aimed at World War I aviation enthusiasts who want to recreate a German biplane with distinctive lines.

The Fokker D.VII was one of the most striking fighters of the final phase of the First World War. Selected in 1918, it was produced by Fokker as well as under license by Albatros and OAW to meet production requirements. Its biplane airframe, the exposed-structure fuselage, and the distinctive engine cowling panels make it a particularly popular subject for aviation scale modeling.

This Roden kit reproduces an early OAW production variant. At 1/48 scale, it lets you work with great care on the typical elements of a Great War aircraft: cockpit, engine, wings, interplane struts, landing gear, and fabric-covered surfaces. Building a biplane requires careful preparation of the parts and a progressive check of the alignment of the masts and wings.

The finish offers many painting possibilities. Aircraft from this period often combine metal panels, wooden components, fabric-covered structure, and national markings. Applying a suitable primer, followed by thin coats of paint, helps preserve fine surface details. Decals should be applied to a smooth, glossy surface, then protected with an appropriate varnish depending on the desired look.

Light weathering can enhance the realism of a model displayed in a diorama or in a showcase: subtle tonal variations on the engine panels, moderate grime around the landing gear, exhaust staining, and a slight variation in the fabric tones add depth without hiding the aircraft’s lines.
