Historical references
Before 1937, Soviet aircraft commonly received a protective green finish on the upper surfaces and grey-blue on the undersides. Starting in 1937, light grey AE-9/AII or aluminium AE-8/AII finishes were also used. From June 1940, standard schemes combine greens on the upper surfaces and light blues on the lower surfaces, with distinct shades depending on whether the aircraft construction was metal or mixed.
