The M1008 is the basic version of a cargo truck within the first family of light military utility vehicles produced by General Motors since World War II. The first generation of these vehicles, developed by GM under the CUCV (Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle) program, was based on the civilian Chevrolet C/K series. In addition to the M1008 pickup, it also included the M1009 utility vehicle, the M1010 ambulance, the M1028 shelter carriers, and the M1031 chassis cab. Between 1983 and 1987, nearly 75,000 vehicles were produced, most of which were delivered to the U.S. Army (68,210 units). The remainder went to the U.S. Air Force (3,578 vehicles), the U.S. Marine Corps (2,973), and the U.S. Navy (504).
These vehicles were used by U.S. forces around the world, including in the Gulf War and during the UN mission in Somalia. Although their withdrawal from active U.S. service began as early as 1994, several CUCVs remained in use in the following years—among others with the SFOR contingent in Bosnia in the second half of the 1990s, and even during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Many of these vehicles were also sold or donated to allied countries such as Albania, Greece, Latvia, or Lebanon.
This kit represents the basic version of the cargo truck, equipped with troop seats in the bed, which can be assembled in either the folded or unfolded position. The tailgate can also be positioned folded, unfolded, or remain movable. The decal sheet includes markings for two U.S. Army, two U.S. Navy, and one SFOR vehicle, each featuring a different overall color or camouflage scheme.
