Outhouse usually consists of three main parts: a hole in the ground, a slab or floor with a small opening, and a cubicle. The pit is usually at least 3 meters (10 feet) deep and at least 1 m (3.2 feet) wide. The World Health Organization recommends building a pit latrine at a reasonable distance from home, balancing ease of access and odor, keeping groundwater and surface water as far away as possible to reduce the risk of contamination.
