The pigments can be applied with a brush onto a prepared surface to modulate shades and create dust, grime, or weathering effects. They can also be mixed with a suitable, odorless thinner for airbrush application and softer color transitions.

For long-lasting fixation, using a pigment fixer is recommended. The result can be gradually adjusted by layering light coats, a method that is especially useful for maintaining control over the finish.
