USS Enterprise CV-6, 1/200 - Trumpeter 03712

The USS Enterprise CV-6 Trumpeter 03712 is a plastic naval model kit to be assembled at 1/200. It depicts the American aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CV-6), a ship of the Yorktown class nicknamed “Big E”, a major figure in the Pacific theater during World War II.

At this scale, the finished model reaches 1 247.2 mm in length and 191.3 mm in width. This large format allows special attention to be paid to the flight deck, the island, the armament, the embarked aircraft, and the many distinctive deck equipment details of an aircraft carrier from that era.

Commissioned into the US Navy in 1938, the USS Enterprise took part in numerous operations in the Pacific theater, including the Battle of Midway, the Guadalcanal campaign, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. It received 20 battle stars for its service during World War II, making it one of the most decorated ships in American naval history.

The Trumpeter kit includes more than 1 130 parts, spread across 44 sprues, with a hull and decks. The hull is molded as a single piece using two-way sliding molds. The deck features a raised, embossed texture, while the armament is provided with detailed treatment. Eight photo-etched sheets provide, in particular, elements intended for railings, ladders, and certain radar parts. A metal anchor chain and metal wire are also included.

The carrier aviation is represented by five F4F-4, five SBD-3, and five TBD-1. These aircraft bring the flight deck to life and help evoke the US Navy’s carrier air operations during the first part of the Pacific War.

Building an aircraft carrier at 1/200 requires careful preparation of the parts and a methodical organization of subassemblies. Photo-etched parts are handled with precision tools and are generally glued with suitable cement. Painting, applying decals, and a measured weathering/patina then highlight the ship’s volumes, the flight deck lines, and the details of the naval equipment.

At 1/200 scale, each dimension of the real ship is reduced by a factor of 200. This model is therefore a large-scale naval project for enthusiasts of American aircraft carriers, maritime history, and World War II dioramas.
