The reference 02241 from Trumpeter offers a plastic model kit to be assembled of the Douglas SBD-1/2 Dauntless for the US Navy and the US Marine Corps, reproduced at the 1/32 scale. This American dive bomber was among the iconic aircraft of the early Second World War in the Pacific.

The Douglas SBD Dauntless

The SBD Dauntless is a carrier-based reconnaissance and dive-bombing aircraft designed by Douglas. The first SBD-1 and SBD-2 versions belong to the initial variants of this family. They predate the later versions deployed during the main naval operations of the conflict in the Pacific.

With its characteristic perforated dive brakes and its two-man crew, the Dauntless is a particularly interesting subject for an American naval aviation model from the 1940-1942 period.

The Trumpeter 02241 model kit

This 1/32 plastic kit lets you build either an SBD-1 or an SBD-2. The 1/32 scale provides a large-scale representation, well suited for painting the cockpit, the engine, the fabric-covered surfaces, and the dive brakes.

The box includes decals for two schemes: an SBD-1 from VMB-2 and an SBD-2 from VMSB-241. A film is also provided for the instrument panel.

Assembly and finishing

As with any snap-together plastic model kit, preparing the parts before gluing helps ensure a high-quality final result. Using the appropriate glue, precise cutting tools, fine sandpaper, and a primer will make the assembly and painting steps easier.

Structural lines, the cockpit area, the radial engine, and the dive brakes offer many opportunities to enhance the model with careful painting, washes, and a light weathering. Decals are best applied to a smooth, glossy surface before using a suitable protective clear coat.
