Avro Lancaster Mk.I/III, 1/72 - Revell 04300
The Revell 04300 recreates the Avro Lancaster B.Mk.I/III in 1/72, one of the most iconic British heavy bombers of the Second World War. This snap-together model kit represents the four-engine Lancaster in its Mk.I and Mk.III versions, two major variants used by the Royal Air Force.
The Avro Lancaster bomber
Developed by Avro from the twin-engine Manchester, the Lancaster made its first flight in January 1941. It quickly became a key aircraft of the RAF’s Bomber Command during the Second World War. Its silhouette is defined by its large wingspan, four Merlin engines, twin tail assembly, and defensive turrets.
The Lancaster B.Mk.Is were equipped with Rolls-Royce Merlin engines. The B.Mk.IIIs were distinguished mainly by the use of Merlin engines built under license by Packard in the United States. Both versions retained a very similar overall configuration.
The Revell 04300 model kit
This 1/72 kit allows you to build a detailed replica of the Lancaster Mk.I or Mk.III. The interior includes, in particular, a cockpit with instrument panel and side consoles, the navigator and radio operator compartments, as well as a detailed bomb bay. The exterior surfaces reproduce recessed panel lines.
Assembly includes three adjustable machine-gun turrets, movable propellers with two types of blades, a detailed landing gear, and canopy glazing options provided in different configurations. The bomb bay can hold twelve bombs as well as a “Cookie” bomb.
Suggested markings
The decal sheet lets you depict two Royal Air Force aircraft:
- Avro Lancaster B.Mk.III from No. 100 Squadron, based at Elsham Wolds in April 1945 ;
- Avro Lancaster B.Mk.I from No. 9 Squadron, based at Bardney in 1945.
Assembly and finishing
Careful preparation of the parts before gluing helps keep this 1/72 aircraft model looking sharp. The glazed areas, turrets, landing gear, and engines deserve special attention during assembly and painting. Applying a suitable primer helps ensure a uniform finish, while a methodical placement of the decals helps reproduce the RAF aircraft markings accurately.
At a scale of 1/72, every dimension of the real aircraft is reduced 72 times. This format offers a good balance between display presence, rich detail, and diorama staging possibilities for a Second World War airfield scene.
