Applying scale model decals without silvering: a complete, reliable workflow

Silvering is a common decal issue where a pale, reflective haze appears under markings. It usually comes from trapped micro-air and poor surface preparation. With a disciplined workflow, it is largely preventable.

1. Start with a proper gloss surface

Matte paint creates micro-texture that traps air. Apply a smooth gloss coat before decal placement to improve adhesion and transparency.

2. Controlled trimming and hydration

Trim close to the artwork, hydrate briefly, and let the decal relax before moving it onto the model. Avoid rushing this step.

3. Use setting/softening solutions correctly

Apply in thin passes and let chemistry work. Do not touch the decal when it starts softening, even if wrinkles appear temporarily.

4. Remove moisture and air carefully
