NM 116 Royal Norwegian Army, 1/35 - AFV-Club AF35S82

The model NM 116 Royal Norwegian Army, reference AF35S82, is a plastic kit to be assembled at 1/35 scale by AFV-Club. It recreates the NM-116, an armoured vehicle from Norway developed from the modernisation of the American light tank M24 Chaffee.

The Norwegian NM-116

The NM-116 is the adaptation made by Norway on M24 Chaffee tanks in order to extend their service with the Royal Norwegian Army. This transformation is especially characterised by its diesel powerpack, its 90 mm main armament and its fire-control equipment. This vehicle is an original subject for a collection dedicated to Cold War armoured vehicles, Scandinavian equipment, or national developments of post-war American vehicles.

The AFV-Club model

AFV-Club reproduces the specific features of the NM-116 with a hull and a turret dedicated to this version. The kit includes a metal 90 mm D-925 gun, a Simrad LV3 laser rangefinder, a .50-calibre M2 heavy machine gun, and related parts for the modernised vehicle’s diesel engine system.

The running gear is equipped with tracks and drive sprockets specific to the NM-116. The suspension is designed to be movable, and two types of road wheels are provided. Photo-etched parts are also included to accurately reproduce certain surface details.

Assembly and finishing

This plastic kit is to be assembled and painted. Careful preparation of the parts, removing moulding seams and precise gluing will help to bring out the details of the hull, turret and running gear. Using a suitable primer later makes it easier to achieve uniform paintwork and highlight raised details.

Photo-etching requires precision tools, especially a fine tweezers and a modelling blade. For a realistic presentation, the finish can be enhanced with progressive weathering: washes in the recesses, dry-brushing on edges, signs of wear, and track work according to the chosen display setting.

Scale 1/35

At 1/35 scale, each dimension of the real vehicle is reduced by a factor of 35. This widely used scale for military vehicles makes it possible to include the NM-116 in an armour collection or in a diorama with compatible figures and accessories.
